Iowa Utility Board Approves Dakota Access Pipeline

The Laborers’ International Union of North America (LIUNA) applauds the Iowa Utility Board’s forward thinking to support the creation of thousands of family supporting jobs for Iowa’s construction workers. The decision to approve the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) will not only put Laborers to work, but will help to expand the economies of cities and towns across the entire state.

When working families have income, they spend it. In the case of construction workers, it is estimated that they generate $188 of economic activity for every $100 they earn. Their investment in the local economy not only feeds, clothes and houses themselves and their family; it generates revenue for Iowa businesses and state and local government. The DAPL also presents an opportunity for veterans and others obtain the necessary skills to gain access to the workforce.

IUB’s approval is an acknowledgement to the quality and safety that LIUNA members are known for. Our members go through a state of the art training program to do this work safely. Our accredited, hands-on training includes up to 164 hours of pipeline specific instruction.

LIUNA member’s commitment to quality extends beyond a dedication to their craft, but also to their sense of community and pride in the environment in which they live and work.

LIUNA recognizes that the IUB made the right decision to enable LIUNA members to put their skills to work to safely build Iowa’s energy future.
